Frequently Asked Questions

Does acupuncture hurt?  The most common response from a patient after receiving their first needle is, "Did you insert the needle yet?". Most people will barely notice an acupuncture needle, and often become relaxed during a treatment. Some possible sensations upon insertion are a brief bee sting or a mild ache, tingling, or warmth at the insertion area.

How big is the needle?  An acupuncture needle is smaller than a sewing needle, and has a rounded point, whereas an injection needle is hollow and has a sharp point. This difference in size and shape of the acupuncture needle allows it to push tissue and vessels out of the way for minimal discomfort.

Is acupuncture safe?  Each new package of needles is sterilized and only used once.

Are there side effects?  Acupuncture is very safe and can be used along side other medical treatments safely. According to the National Institutes of Health, “the incidence of adverse effects is substantially lower than that of many drugs or other accepted medical procedures.”

Where do I start?  Call us to make an appointment for an Initial Exam. At your exam and first treatment, we will discuss what your health concerns and goals are. A treatment plan will be created after a detailed health history and discussion of how acupuncture can help you. Your treatment may consist of any combination of: acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, tuina, herbs and/or supplements and lifestyle suggestions.
